Facing Blackness is a multimedia exhibition that takes the public through the obscure history of portraying Black people from the colonial period to contemporary society. Using unique archive material and visual art, we show how anti-black racism became part of the Dutch 'cultural archive' and our everyday ideas, customs and utensils. On the other hand, the exhibition shows how there has always been 'everyday resistance' to various forms of racism and how Black people themselves have given and continue to give meaning to their culture and identity.

Sarotti Moor Sculpture
Description
An account of the resource
Polyresin sculpture depicting a dark-skinned boy carrying a golden coloured tray in line with the symbolic imagery typical of Blackamoor figures. The figure is dressed ornately from head-to-toe with vibrant colours and an outfit that seems inspired by Moorish culture and stylings. He wears a bright blue coat with a white buttoned-up shirt, long white gloves, and tailcoats that extend out behind him in a manner which implies the figure is moving forward rapidly. The figure also wears red haram pants decorated with brown/golden stars which match his Moorish shoes ('Balgha') which are painted with the same colour as the tray and the golden stars. The figure is crowned with a blue, red, and golden turban which is decorated with a golden plate at the front with the letter "S" (Sarotti-Mohr) and a crest of feathers emerging over the top of this. The entire figure is fixed upon a larger base painted white with black flanks - on the underside of the base is written "€85" in pencil. Chocolate would have been placed on the tray of the statue as a form of advertising.

Sarotti Toy Car
Description
An account of the resource
Metal and plastic toy car contained in clear perspex and cardboard packaging. The model depicts a 1935 Morris Parcels Van toy produced in partnership with the Sarotti chocolate company as a form of advertising. It features three Moor caricature figures printed on the side of the white delivery van showing them dressed in traditional Orientalised clothing, each holding trays which are intended to hold the Sarotti chocolates in a style similar to other Sarotti products. On the roof of the toy van are the words "Eine Exquisite Mischung Feinster Pralinen" followed by the name of the company "Sarotti" in italicised font.
The outside of the box contains information about where the toy was made "Made in England", the name of the toy manufacturer "Days Gone", and the name of the toy collection "Premier Collection" (written in italics). There is also a sticker on the front of the box "€3"

Mekka Cardboard Tobacco Box
Description
An account of the resource
Red cardboard box depicting an Arab man smoking a tobacco pipe, he wears a white Arab robe with blue and gold detailing on it along with a headscarf. This box was used to contain 50g of Oriental mix tobacco. Created by Cruwell-Tabak. The word "Mekka" is located next to the Arab figure in large yellow font along with the words "capochiert... milder feinschnitt Orient mischung" in yellow, white, and black italic font. The term "capochiert" is purely an advertising statement, which means that only the tips of the leaf (caput, the head) have been processed. This indicates the high quality of the tobacco leaf.
