Samva Metal Polish Bottle
Description
An account of the resource
Cylindrical metal bottle. On the lid is stamped the word "PATENT." The bottle is wrapped in paper with a caricatured black woman holding another bottle of Samva Brut. With her other hand she points to the text along the bottom of the paper: "SAMVA VOOR METALEN" on one side, and on the other, "SAMVA POUR METAUX." The French side has a stain over the word "Metaux," rendering it difficult to read. In a banner by the woman's head, the polish brands itself "No. 1." Between the Dutch and French sides, a small banner reads as follows: "SAMVA tel. 3321.60 Etterbeek - Av. de la Chasse - 64 - Jachtlaan." Along the top of the illustration are the words "Bouchage, breveté" in French and "Berreveteerd, stopmiddel" in Dutch.

Doing research during the archiving process - Richard discovered that there is a strange connection between the US and UK makers of these racist castiron piggy banks, where both J.E.Stevens and John Harper & Co are using the same exact stylings and moulds for their designs despite being separated and patented by both companies.

Dinah Bank
Description
An account of the resource
Castiron coin bank made to resemble blackface caricature of a black person woman. The figure has an arm outstretched which acts as a lever. When raised, the arm 'opens' the figure's mouth (by removing the 'tongue') and causes its eyes to roll back in its head. The figure wears a gold dress, gold earings, and a gold necklace, and has wide red lips and white teeth. Different to the previous coin bank, this figure's hand has space for a coin, and when raised to the mouth, it appears that a coin placed in the hand would slide directly into the mouth. On the back is stamped the name "Dinah" and on the bottom is imprinted "J.E.Stevens.1890.PAT103."

Horma Black & White Cigar Case
Description
An account of the resource
A cigar tin. On the top is an illustration of a black man smoking a cigar with a caricatured bright red lips. The man wears a tuxedo with a flower pinned to his lapel. At the top of the box, the word "Bolknak" is printed in thin red-orange letters, matching the man's lips. Two inches from the bottom of the box, the word "Horma" appears in bold, art-deco red font, again the same colour as the man's lips. At the bottom is a black banner, on which is printed "Black & White" in white text. Around the tin's lid is a red-orange banner. The bottom of the box is gold coloured and worn. The box itself is quite flimsy and worn, and does not open or close easily.
Horma stands for Horst & Maas Sigaren. A sigar factory founded in 1904, and closed in 1953.

Black Pete "Stop Blackface" Postcard
Description
An account of the resource
Postcard with an illustration of a museum. The focus of the frame is a large framed portrait of Zwart Piet, with the plaque under him reading "1850-2015." Around the corner three other portraits are visible, each one with a prominent black figure. A fourth portrait is visible but obscured. The first appears to depict police violence against a black man; in the second, a white police officer looks down on a black figure; in the third, the black figure is the only focus. In front of the Zwarte Piet portrait, there are three figures: a white woman, a small white child (presumably her son), and their dog. The son has a speech bubble attributed to him that has been left blank. In the top left-hand corner of the postcard, the words "Zwarte Piet hoort thuis in het museum" appear. At the bottom left, "stop blackface" is written in the same font. At the bottom right, the artist signs his name: George Adegite. On the reverse of the postcard, "stop blackface" is written again, and the space for writing is separated from the address lines by the address "www.stopblackface.com" written three times. At the bottom left of the postcard, the words "Vormgeving door Cablai.nl" appear.
