Zwarte Piet Cards (SIO)

Rectangluar black cardboard box containing 31 cards. The card game is resemblant of 'Happy Families', requiring players to match up cards which have the same occupation. Each card displays a child -either a boy or a girl- carrying out a task/job. The cards lay on top of a string that us used to easily remove them from their sitting. The top card is different from all other 30 cards, depicting Zwarte Piet in his traditional garbs dancing atop a red background. The top of the cardboard box also contains a bust of Zwarte Piet with his hands out surrounded by translations of his name in French, German, and Dutch; the SIO logo; and small print text reading "made and designed by SIO all rights reserved". The sides of the outer cardboard box also contain translationf of Zwarte Piet in French, German, and Dutch, as well as the SIO logo and trademark.

Facing Blackness is a multimedia exhibition that takes the public through the obscure history of portraying Black people from the colonial period to contemporary society. Using unique archive material and visual art, we show how anti-black racism became part of the Dutch 'cultural archive' and our everyday ideas, customs and utensils. On the other hand, the exhibition shows how there has always been 'everyday resistance' to various forms of racism and how Black people themselves have given and continue to give meaning to their culture and identity.
