Zwarte Piet Cards

Rectangular cardboard box containing 31 cards. The front of the box contains an illustration of a Zwarte Piet figure dressed in a green dress suit with a yellow sack in his right hand. The figure is also dressed in a green feather, gold-hooped earrings, green tights, and green shoes.. Above this figure are the words "Zwarte Piet" in red font above a white background. Below him is the word "Kaartspel, also in red font. The image is surrounded by a blue border, with the rest of the box being in the red. On the back of the box are instructions on how to play the card game, along with an illustration of Sinterklaas and his horse Amerigo. On the sides of the box is information about the manufacturing company and age ranges. Each card in the set has a different coloured character, either: Piet, Sinterklaas, Amerigo, A Snowman, or a Sack which must be matched up to win the game. The only unique car is the Zwarte Piet card which has no corresponding match.

Facing Blackness is a multimedia exhibition that takes the public through the obscure history of portraying Black people from the colonial period to contemporary society. Using unique archive material and visual art, we show how anti-black racism became part of the Dutch 'cultural archive' and our everyday ideas, customs and utensils. On the other hand, the exhibition shows how there has always been 'everyday resistance' to various forms of racism and how Black people themselves have given and continue to give meaning to their culture and identity.
