Zwarte Piet Candy Gift Set

Card and plastic gift set containing a Zwarte Piet figurine with candy and a suprise gift contained within a plastic egg. The outside of gift set is wrapped in a red card package, with several images of different Zwarte Piet depictions. The front side has two bust figures, a boy and a girl, dressed in the traditional Zwarte Piet clothing (ruff, hat, feather) situated to the left of the words "Candy Gift Set" in yellow font. This front-side also includes a company logo of "De Club van Sinterklaas" surrounded by a staff and a Sinterklaas hat - and finally, a small gift on the left hand corner of the package. The top of the package has 4 images of Zwarte Piet, with 2 additional figures, one showing a professor in Zwarte Piet attire and the other - a middle aged man with a black (Elvis-style) wig. The back of the package contains the ingredients for the candy, along with information about the company, and a barcode.

Facing Blackness is a multimedia exhibition that takes the public through the obscure history of portraying Black people from the colonial period to contemporary society. Using unique archive material and visual art, we show how anti-black racism became part of the Dutch 'cultural archive' and our everyday ideas, customs and utensils. On the other hand, the exhibition shows how there has always been 'everyday resistance' to various forms of racism and how Black people themselves have given and continue to give meaning to their culture and identity.
