COC's Shakespeare Club

Description

Postcard for COC's Shakespeare club taking place in the courtyard of the Amsterdam Museum during Amsterdam pride. COC's Shakespeare club is a relaxed hang-out spot, with the main goal of faciliating community, connection and culture. This postcard highlights the history of Amsterdam's LGBTQIA+ community through archival photos. The photo on the front (2016) shows the increasing diversity and vitality of the LGBTQIA+ community, and thanks this to the increased emancipation of LGBTQIA+ people with diverse religious and cultural backgrounds.

COC's Shakespeare Club is titled after COC's name during its founding in 1946: Shakespeare Club. Back then being LGBTQIA+ was taboo, so a pseudonym was chosen to hide the actual purpose of the club. In 1949, the club renamed itself to Cultuur- en Ontspannings Centrum (Culture and Leisure center) or the COC. The COC is committed to equal rights, emancipation and social acceptance of the LGBTQIA+ community in the Netherlands and abroad.
